What is orthodontics?

Through orthodontic treatment, problems like crooked or crowded teeth, overbites or underbites, missing teeth, traumatic occlusion and abnormal wear of the teeth can be treated. An orthodontist usually recommends braces to improve the patient's physical appearance. Orthodontic problems that are left untreated may become worse in the future. Crowding and misaligned teeth make brushing and flossing ineffective. This can eventually lead to tooth decay and gum disease which can lead to teeth and bone loss. Investing in orthodontic treatment has life long rewards. Teeth that are straight and aligned are easier to maintain and keep clean.

How Orthodontic Treatment Works

Your orthodontist will know what appliance is best for your particular problem, but the patient often has a choice. Braces generally come in metal, ceramic or plastic. They may be removable or bonded to the teeth. The type of appliance will depend on the specific problem and the recommendation of the orthodontist. Teeth are moved to their new position by using gentle force over a period of time. Innovations in braces and techniques make this a great time to consider orthodontic treatment.

Duration of Treatment

Treatment time typically ranges from one to three years. Patients grow at different rates and everyone responds to treatment in different ways. Other factors affecting treatment time are compliance from the patient and the severity of the case. Compliance to treatment such as wearing prescribed rubberbands, wearing appliances properly, and keeping regular appointments aid in the progression of treatment time.
